EVENT: Dinosaur Train

 Roar…take a ride back to the Jurassic Period on the Dinosaur Train! Patterned after the hit PBS Television cartoon series, families take an adventurous ride to the Nature Trackers Activity Area where they explore, play and learn about life science, natural history and dinosaurs. Guests will meet their favorite T-rex, Buddy, find real fossils and dig for dinosaur bones! There is also music, giant dinosaurs and merchandise!

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

Steam train ride to the Nature Trackers Activity Area Nature Trackers Membership Card – After participating in the challenges at the activity/exploration area, membership cards will be distributed to children on the train journey back to the depot.

Nature Trackers Club Guide Book – In partnership with PBS, children will have the opportunity to join the Nature Trackers Club by participating in activities at the activity/exploration area. Nature Trackers Club Guide Books will be distributed on the outbound trip to the activity/exploration area. The guidebooks contain challenges that correspond to activities they will participate in at the activity/exploration area.

Conductor Punching Commemorative Dinosaur Train Ticket – Each passenger will be provided a souvenir Dinosaur Train ticket.

AT THE NATURE TRACKERS ACTIVITY AREA:

Dinosaur Footprints (Challenge #1 TRACKING) - Follow the life-sized dinosaur footprints on the ground and figure out which prints belong to which inflatable dinosaur?! Kids will see some of their favorite characters from the show!

The Ol’ Susquehanna Mine (Challenge #2 COLLECTING) – Each Guest takes the mine tour and learns about the unique history of the Ol’ Susquehanna Mine. After witnessing the exploding mine shaft and history tour the guests learn how to pan for fossils! Each guest receives a bag of fossil bearing ore. There are over 20 different fossils along with a beautiful identifying card!

Inflatable Dinosaur Display – Huge inflatable dinosaurs right from the show!

Photos with Buddy – Free photo opportunities with Buddy will be available at the activity area.

Temporary Tattoos – Dinosaur Train themed temporary tattoos to children’s faces, arms or hands at the Activity Area.

Spin Art Area – Make some wile creations with the spin art machine!

Excavation Area – Dinosaur Dig! (Challenge #3 CONSERVATION) – Guests will participate in a real archaeology dig and find dinosaur skeletons.

Dinosaur Show – Field Paleontologists Mike and Roberta Straka will take you on a scientific exploration highlighting the world of dinosaurs, fossils and rocks/minerals. Each summer, the team explores the Badlands of North and South Dakota excavating dinosaurs. This fun-filled wow-factor show will cover the formation of fossils and herbivores vs. carnivores. We will discuss our work as field paleontologist and our background in geology in a relatable way with entertainment, humor, magic and real fossils. The presentation will feature:

  • “Mr. Nixon”, a real eight foot Triceratops skull discovered by our team in 1996 and is 67 million years old
  • A real Albertosaurus skull will highlight the features of a carnivore.
  • Original music
  • Songs
  • Show & tell with rare fossils
  • A touch of magic which includes a special “egg magic trick” which segues to *presentation of a real dinosaur egg fossil
  • “Dinosaur Game Show” will round out the show.
